China Reaffirms Support for Cuba’s Economy, Livelihoods Amid US Sanctions

(MENAFN) China has reiterated its backing for Cuba’s economic development and social welfare, pledging continued support as the Caribbean nation faces ongoing US sanctions, according to reports citing state media.

Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi made the remarks during a meeting with Cuban Foreign Minister Bruno Rodríguez in New York, held on the sidelines of a UN Security Council high-level session, according to Xinhua News Agency.

Wang said Beijing would continue to “uphold justice and speak up for Cuba,” adding that China would support what he described as the Cuban people’s efforts to protect their rights and resist external pressure. He emphasized that China opposes what it calls “power politics and bullying,” while calling for respect for national sovereignty and independence.

Rodríguez, in turn, expressed appreciation for China’s consistent support, including diplomatic backing and material assistance during Cuba’s ongoing economic difficulties. He said Cuba is currently experiencing its most severe challenges since its revolution, attributing the situation to longstanding US sanctions and restrictions.

He also reiterated Havana’s support for China’s positions on international issues, including Taiwan.

The meeting comes as Cuba continues to face severe fuel shortages and recurring power outages. According to reports, China recently delivered a shipment of 15,000 tons of rice to Cuba as part of ongoing assistance efforts.

US restrictions, including an oil embargo imposed earlier this year, have contributed to economic strain and energy shortages on the island, further intensifying its reliance on external support, according to reports.
