Trump Tightens Policy on Cuba

(MENAFN) U.S. President Donald Trump took a significant step on Monday by signing a memorandum that tightens U.S. policy toward Cuba, imposing stricter financial transaction and travel restrictions.

The White House released a fact sheet outlining the new policy, which includes rigorous record-keeping requirements for all travel-related transactions for at least five years, along with routine audits to ensure compliance. This move reinforces the legal ban on U.S. tourism to Cuba.

The Trump administration has set its sights on ending economic activities that largely benefit the Cuban government, military, and intelligence agencies. The memorandum also prohibits any direct or indirect financial dealings with entities controlled by the Cuban military, including the powerful Grupo de Administracion Empresarial S.A. (GAESA), as well as its affiliates. As a result, more Cuban individuals and organizations will face restrictions on conducting business with Americans, as the long-standing U.S. economic embargo is further escalated.

Trump, who has consistently maintained a hard stance on Cuba, reversed his predecessor Joe Biden’s decision to remove Cuba from the U.S. list of "state sponsors of terrorism" when he took office for his second term in January. Just days before leaving office in 2021, Trump had officially designated Cuba as a "state sponsor of terrorism."

In response, Cuban Foreign Minister Bruno Rodríguez Parrilla sharply condemned the new policy, calling it "a criminal behavior that violates the human rights of an entire nation."

"The Presidential Memorandum vs. Cuba released today by the U.S. government strengthens the aggression and economic blockade that punishes the whole Cuban people and is the main obstacle to our development," he expressed on the social platform X.
